Configuration at the Psion S5 / Ericsson MC side
1a. Open Control Panel, choose Modem. Edit your 'Direct cable connection' setting, or make a new configuration file.

1b. Copy the settings for this configuration in the four tab windows below. Save your settings (choose 'OK').

2a. Next, choose the Internet control panel, to edit your internet service settings. You best make a new configuration file that you may name e.g. ARA (Apple Remote Access). You can then copy the (default?) settings below.

2b. In the tab Service you indicate that you want to use a direct connection.

2c. In the tab Account you enter the username and password that you configured in 'Users & Groups' tab of the File Sharing control panel on the Mac (see below).

2d. In Addresses do not choose 'Get IP address from server', instead provide an IP-address within your network domain that is not used by another client (you can test this on the Mac-side, with Remote Access: see below). Consult your system administrator to get one, if necessary. You may copy the DNS addresses from your TCP/IP control panel on the Mac.

2e. You do not need a login script.

2f. Under Advanced, enable PPP extensions, rest is off.

Configuration at the Mac side (MacOS9.x); sorry, Dutch only, but screens are essentially the same
Note that you can automate switching between Modem and ARA configurations by using Location Manager: all necessary settings are activated at once. See the LM information on how to configure a new 'location' setting. If you do not use a modem you can even leave your settings as they are. They do not interfere with internet programs.
1a. First, configure a New User in the 'Users & Groups' tab of the @Filesharing control panel: I called it EPOC here (a 'network user').

1b. Your identity should match that of what you entered in the Internet control panel on the S5 (see above).

1c. Confirm that the user is allowed to make a connection.

1d. ...and confirm that the user can call in under the Remote Access option.

2. Set your Modem control panel to the appropriate port (this picture was made on a PowerBook G3 with only one serial port): 'Modem port' seems the most obvious, of course. Then choose the fastest Null Modem config file (115200 kbps). Both other options seem irrelevant.

3a. Open Apple Remote Access, choose 'Answering' from the menu.

3b. Confirm that incoming calls must be answered. Provide access to the whole network. In PPP-server configuration, confirm that TCP/IP-clients can get access with PPP ('Point-to-Point Protocol'); provide the same fixed IP-address as is used on the S5/MC218. Note that you can also test which IP-addresses are available to you by entering a number that share the first two 2-3 digit numbers of your own IP-address. If it is not available, you will be noticed. Perhaps more safe is to ask your system administrator to give you your own extra address. Disable 'Client cab use own IP-address'.

3c. So this is the ARA 'ready' screen when you have switched Answering 'on'. You may close ARA.

That should do the trick. When you start using a internet application on your S5, select the appropriate configuration file from the dialogue, and the connection is set up. If you have switched on ARA on the Mac, you can follow the log-in procedure. You now have unlimited access to internet.
